  I read a quote that said, once you carry your own water, you'll value every drop. I have also heard the popular phrase, who feels it, knows it. I strongly agree with both of these. I grew up in a family of hard-working people. I've never seen either of my parents depending on handouts. Even though they weren't on a weekly or monthly payroll, our basic necessities were provided for.  Sometimes, I saw the look on my mother's face and I heard the frustration in her voice. Just knowing, she was doing her best, but the ends would never meet. I never understood the pressure she endured, until I settled for a low-income job that could barely afford my cost of living.  Here are six things I didn't understand about being broke until I started working in a low-income job at nineteen years old. 1. Life is a great teacher and there is something that you can learn every day if you allow yourself to. Never feel as though you know everything, you're only deceiving yourself. Learn from your experiences, learn from other people, and learn from nature.  Whatever you do never stop growing in every aspect of your life. Challenge yourself to do better than the last time. How can I manage my monthly salary?  There is no one-size-fits-all in money management, it's up to us to manage our money in a way that works best for us. My strategy may not work for you and vice versa. I could be earning more than you do and have fewer responsibilities.  This is what I do: I spend less than I earn.  I know the exact amount of expenditure my budget can accommodate. So, I try to keep them at a minimum. I don't create unnecessary debts that will cause more stress on my income. I keep up to date with my bills, payments in full, on or before the due dates. I prepare my own home-cooked meals as opposed to dining out, often. I avoid habits that will drastically reduce my money, drinking, smoking, partying, shopping spree, etc. I don't waste my money on the latest trends. I live within my means.
